In June 1998, Italy’s new head coach Cesar Maldini brought Roberto Baggio to the World Cup in France. On June 11, the Italian team drew 2-2 with Chile in the first group match. Roberto Baggio first assisted teammate Christian Vieri to score a goal, and then used it in the 85th minute of the game. A penalty kick helped the team level the score. In subsequent games, Roberto Baggio was gradually replaced by Alessandro del Piero. On July 3, the Italian team played against the host French team in the quarter-finals. Roberto Baggio came off the bench and scored Italy’s first penalty in the penalty shootout that followed. But the Italian team eventually lost 3-4 in the penalty shootout and missed the semi-finals.
