In the 1999-2000 season, Ronaldo scored 3 goals in 7 games while suffering from injuries. On October 23rd, 1999, Ronaldo scored in the Milan Derby, but was sent off with a red card for the very first time in his Serie A career. In the match Inter Milan against Lecce on November 21st, Ronaldo was injured and diagnosed with a partial patellar tendon tear, and on November 30th, he was again diagnosed with a comminuted fracture of the knee. He had the surgery in Paris, and took 144 days off to recover. On April 12, 2000, Ronaldo returned to the field representing Inter Milan in the Coppa Italia final after being absent for 4 months. However, in the 6th minute of the game, Ronaldo fell while trying to break through. His patella tendon was teared again. The injury kept Ronaldo away from the field for the following one year and five months.
