In the 1995-96 season, Figo’s contract with Barcelona has successfully made up for Barcelona’s loss of Michael Laudrup. Figo soon has grown into a formidable attack and firmly occupied a main position in Barcelona’s first season because La Liga and Sporting Lisbon have a similar play style and little effort of adaptation was needed. He has all the qualities of a midfielder while cruising along the sidelines. Figo has made 5 goals in 35 league games in his first season in La Liga even though the overall team performance was lackluster.
Figo continued playing for Barcelona from 1996 to 1999, and helped the team win the La Liga championship of 1997-98 and 1998-99 seasons. Barcelona lost in the 1999-00 season, and failed to complete its three- consecutive La Liga’s championships, but Figo’s performance in this year was outstanding. He scored 9 goals in the league games.
